Hunting
Boot Reviews
Hunting boots aren’t the first thing that comes to mind
when you think of hunting, however if you have a pair of hunting
boots that leaks or your feet become cold on stand they can
quickly ruin any hunt. These often overlooked pieces of hunting
gear can’t be underestimated. A good pair of hunting boots
can easily make the difference between a good day of hunting
and a great day. Hunting & Fishing Gear Review continues
our review summary articles by presenting the first in a multiple
part series of hunting boot reviews. Essentially we take all
of the recent hunting boot reviews and summarize them for you
all in one place. |

Caldwell
Lead Sled
Deer slugs and turkey loads don’t have Phil Bourjaily
to kick around anymore. Ever since I started using the Caldwell
Lead Sled at the range, sighting in magnum shotguns doesn’t
hurt in the least. The sled’s padded rear rest fits against
your shoulder and cups the butt of the gun. Under recoil, the
gun has to push against the 17-pound frame and however many
bags of lead shot you’ve added to the tray. This is one
recoil-reducing gadget that really works. The Caldwell techies
have measured recoil reductions up to 80 and 90 percent with
hard-kicking shotguns and .458s with 50 pounds of shot added
to the sled. My shoulder isn’t calibrated to make precise
measurements, but I’d say that’s about the amount
of relief I feel. $120; 877-509-9160; www.battenfeldtechnologies.co |

Treestands
and Treestand
Accessories
The use of tree stands is on the increase across the country
in all segments of the sport. Among other things, the height
advantage helps keep human scent above approaching game, and
puts hunters above the quarry's normal field of view. It also
makes it easier to spot game from a distance, allowing more
time to prepare for the shot, a distinct advantage for bowhunter. |

The
RodLoft Pro
Interior overhead rod racks help you keep things organized and
out of the way of passengers while making room for coolers,
tackle boxes and other gear. They also prevent those nasty tangles
that always seem to develop when rods get together in close
quarters, eliminate exposure to highway elements (dust, grit
and grime can be a problem for reels) and reduce the risk of
theft. The RodLoft Pro consists of two telescoping bars, extendable
to fit the width of most any passenger vehicle. You can hang
the RodLoft bars on garment hooks, molding pieces, pickup topper
brackets, or other interior hooks, or you can stick them to
side windows using suction cups. Mounting hardware for all these
applications is included. The rods are supported by neoprene
foam inserts in plastic hangers, with elastic security straps
on bottom. You can rotate the hanger assemblies upside-down
and out of the way, when not carrying rods. |

takes the place of a steady shooting bench. Without the rock-solid
support a bench provides, long-range accuracy is iffy. Everyone
shoots better off a bench. The Buck Bench folds like an ironing
board into a flat, 4 1/2-inch package for easy carrying or storage. |

Personal
Locator Beacons, or PLB's, are portable units designed to
be carried by an individual person. They operate exclusively
on 406 MHz. and all PLB's also have a built-in, low-power homing
beacon that transmits on 121.5 MHz. This allows rescue forces
to home in on a beacon once the 406 MHz satellite system has
gotten them "in the ballpark" (about 2-3 miles). Some
newer PLB's also allow GPS units to be integrated into the distress
signal. This GPS-encoded position dramatically improves the
location accuracy down to the 100-meter level... that's roughly
the size of a football field! |

and secure valuables and equipment in vehicles and is ideal
for the weekend sportsman and especially for the seasonal sportsman

floor in a pickup but to act as a secure storage unit that will
act as a deterrent to theft. A TSS module is built to withstand
the casual thief and also prevent the more determined vehicle
burglar. Our remote control locking system is virtually undetectable
from the exterior and is backed up by a hidden release known

Whitetailopoly
- A Board Game For Hunters Like most ideas for new hunting-related
products, this one was the result of spending allot of time
in a treestand. As he considered all of the versions of Monopoly
that had been spun off from the original game - Golfopoly, Ghettopoly
and others - deer hunter Dirk Gadd thought there had to be something
with more appeal to sportsmen. Enter Whitetailopoly ... In Whitetailopoly,
you can buy hunting properties (they're real - 22 of the best
whitetail destinations in North America) and charge others to
hunt your land. Need to pay a $50.00 fine for falling out of
a tree stand? Use your buck-adorned bills. But be careful, landing
in jail in this game will get your hunting license suspended.

Personal Locator Beacons have been authorized for use in the
United States since July 1, 2003. U.S. residents are now able
to purchase, register, and use your PLB anywhere in the United
States. The MicroPLB
is designed for emergency, life and death situations. Since
one never knows when an emergency will occur, a PLB must be
easy to carry and readily accessible when one needs it. Therefore,
the MicroPLB is not only small but very thin (the same thickness
as a king sized cigarette pack) so that it can be comfortably
carried in a pocket or pouch. It is also designed for easy operation
by an injured person, with one hand, and without eyesight (or
in darkness). It is easy to operate, without small knobs, covers,
or switches to confuse the operator during an emergency. For
marine use, it will float in water when stowed in the flotation
pouch. |

Sno-Seal
Original Beeswax Waterproofing protects leather from rain,
sun, snow, and salt. The beeswax formula dries to a solid wax
that "stays put" in the surface of the leather so
it lasts longer. Our competitors' greases, oil, and animal products
are able to migrate through the leather till they clog all the
pores. These waterproofing products fill the natural spaces
that are supposed to absorb perspiration and insulate. In addition,
animal fats weaken and rot leather. The tannery worked hard
to remove the fats and preserve the leather, so it's hard to
imagine why you'd put it back on. Sno-Seal will help you feel
more comfortable in Gore-Tex® fabric lined boots because
it allows the Gore-Tex®-absorbed perspiration to escape
out of the leather. And not only will Sno-Seal keep you warm
and dry, it'll also help you from getting tired. A typical leather
boot can soak up to a pound of water. That means you lift an
additional 2,212 lbs. to walk one mile. Sno-Seal keeps the whole
boot dry, warm and light. |

Rough
Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton The book follows
the usual guidebook pattern -- history, geology, detailed maps,
hotels and restaurants, and safety and survival tips. All vital
information for an informed, successful vacation. Stand-out
sections included the best 40 hikes in the park, from day hikes
to back country treks; a "22 Things Not To Miss" (Jenny
Lake and Helen's Corral Drive-Inn caught my eye), and a color
insert on the hydrothermal aspects of Yellowstone that explains
the mysteries of mudpots, fumaroles and travertine terraces.
Another insert details the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone.
Early in 1995, 14 wolves caught in Alberta, Canada, were transplanted
to the park. Around 14 packs roam the park, with the population
around 140. Wolf-watching has become a tourist rave. But Timblin
warns: "Should a wolf approach -- a rare but not unheard-of
occurrence -- get into the closest car and drive away."

The No-Peep
is an eye alignment device. There is a lens with a dot. Behind
the lens is a ring. You adjust it so the dot is inside the ring
when you are at your anchor point. The No-Peep will train you
to draw to the same anchor point every time. You just draw your
bow while looking at your sight pins and target. You will see
the No-Peep in your peripheral vision. You just move your head
slightly to align the dot in the ring if it is off. Most of
the time it will be aligned because the No-Peep has trained
you like an Olympic archer. |

Treetent
A totally new way to experience nature. A limited-edition dollop
of sci-fi futurism. A 13-foot-tall cred-building choice that
silences that, "We hate camping!" whining once and
for all. Dutch sculptor and designer Dré Wapenaar has
earned international fame for making the world's coolest architectural
tents. Nestled among the branches, up off the ground, there's
a nine-foot-diameter hardwood floor and groovy round mattress
inside. It sleeps two adults comfortably and also makes the
world's coolest tree fort/spaceship (with adjustable planetary
landing steps). |
