Be Bear Aware!

From Center for Wildlife Information
featuring the "Be Bear Aware" and "Wildlife Stewardship" websites!

Hunters must be able to tell the difference between a grizzly and a black bear because grizzly bears cannot be legally hunted in Montana! In fact, there is a new mandatory bear identification testing required to purchase a black bear license.

Three simple rules will help you make the right decision.
     1. Learn how to identify bears.
     2. Be absolutely sure of your target.
     3. If in doubt, DON'T SHOOT!

Look for a combination of characteristics

  • short rounded ears
  • shoulder hump
  • dished face profile
  • front claw 2-4" long
  • long, light claws
  • color and size can be misleading

  • tall pointed ears
  • no shoulder hump
  • straight face profile
  • front claw 1.5" long
  • short, dark claws
  • color and size can be misleading
