Intro letter to teachers and kids - April 7, 2005

Dear teachers and kids,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Mark Henckel. I'm the outdoor editor of the Billings Gazette here in Montana and the really old computer guy who will be putting together Missouri River Adopt-A-Fish reports for you each week. How do I know I'm really old? My two boys tell me so. They're real gentle about it. They say things like, "Wow, Dad - you're really, really old!" and, "You're so old that when you were born, permanent hair hadn't been invented yet - that's why you're so bald! Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!" I've e-mailed a picture of me so you know what I look like. I'm holding up a big walleye. The baldness is why I'm wearing a cap. I wear caps a lot.

I'm also e-mailing a picture of my fishing partner. He's my six-year-old black Labrador named Smokey. Most folks have hunting dogs. Smokey is my fishing dog. I'm trying to teach him to be a fish pointer so he can point fish for me when we're out in the boat together. That way, I'll know where to cast to catch fish. So far, the fish-pointing isn't working real well, but he is really good at pointing the lunch cooler. He points birds that fly past. He points the shoreline where he wants to get out of the boat and play. And he really likes it when he gets to splash around in the water and swim. We keep working on the fish pointing, though.

Together, Smokey and I will send you an e-mail letter each week. We'll tell you what it's like here in this part of Montana and talk to you about fish and fishing. Anyone, teachers or students, should feel free to e-mail me at walleyes@walleyesunlimited.com whenever you want and ask me any questions you might have about Adopt-A-Fish, fish, fishing or anything else. I'll do my best to reply quickly and answer your questions.

I hope you have fun with 2005 Missouri River Adopt-A-Fish. You can read the weekly update from our biologists and check on your fish locations at: www.walleyesunlimited.com/adopt-fish/findyourfish.html. We're looking forward to a good time in the weeks to come.

Signed,

Mark, the old guy
