“Montana Wildlife Federation and
Phil Tawney Hunters Conservation
Endowment Board
Offer College Scholarship”

Helena, MT - With the 2004 archery season now in full swing, and on the eve
of the opening of the backcountry deer and elk season, Sept 15, the Phil
Tawney Hunters Conservation Endowment and Montana Wildlife Federation
(MWF) proudly announce a new scholarship for junior and senior college
students committed to our hunting, wildlife, and outdoor heritage.

The $1000 scholarship is being offered by the MWF endowment that was established in 1998 honoring the legacy of the late Phil Tawney, a third-generation Montanan, lifetime sportsman, and conservation leader. Phil’s passion and commitment to protecting Montana’s fish and wildlife, their vulnerable habitats, and the future of hunting is the heart of the Endowment Mission Statement:

“To educate and inform the general public about hunting ethics, fair chase, and values to perpetuate the sport of the hunt through efforts to conserve habitat and wildlife; and to stimulate the recruitment, mentoring, and involvement of youth in hunting and conservation activities.”

Land Tawney, Phil’s son and Endowment board officer said, “My mother (Robin) and I are absolutely thrilled with the offering of the scholarship. This is the first step in offering ‘living legacy’ - conservation education funds, in memory of my father who committed his life to our wildlife heritage and our Montana hunting legacy. The Endowment, in the near future, will also be announcing a grants program for 501(c)3 organizations that seek financial support for conservation projects.”

Applicants must have an academic major in a field related to conservation, exhibit a commitment to general public hunting ethics, fair chase, and support values to perpetuate the sport of the hunt through efforts to conserve habitat and wildlife. Scholarship materials have been distributed to all college financial aid offices and appropriate departments. Application deadline is December 31, 2005 with announcement of the scholarship winner at the Montana Wildlife Federation’s Annual Convention in April 2005.

For more information a student should contact college financial aid offices or Montana Wildlife Federation, Jan Cronin, jcronin@mtwf.org, P.O.
