When books about duck hunting are written, they usually focus on the Chesapeake Bay, the Canadian prairie wetland country, or the great mallard hunting in Arkansas. But Montana waterfowlers know a pretty good secret—there's plenty of great duck and goose hunting in Big Sky Country. The seasons are long, the limits are usually generous, and the best hunting is in some of the most spectacular country in the world!

Want to duck hunt at high altitude? Try Red Rock Lakes and the Centennial Valley in October. Looking for big concentrations of geese? The snow goose migration into Freezeout Lake at the end of October and the beginning of November is spectacular. Looking to do a little hunting late in the fall, after big game seasons have closed? There's probably a pretty good mallard shoot to be had on the Yellowstone, the Missouri, or the Flathead, not to mention warm water springs across the state. And for much of the fall, a duck hunting expedition in the morning can be combined with a little pheasant walk in the afternoon.

Don't miss a chance to get out on the marsh as dawn breaks and the whisper of wings cuts through the still morning air!

Obtaining or Renewing a Hunting License?

Hunting and fishing licenses are issued through the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP). Hunting and fishing licenses can generally be purchased at any retail outlet that deals in hunting and fishing equipment, such as sporting goods stores. However, tags for some species of big game are only available through drawings. Regulations booklets, Federal Duck Stamps, and season/harvest information can usually also be obtained through those retailers.

In addition to licensing, MFWP has jurisdiction over the following:

  • hunting and fishing regulations such as season timing and duration;
  • animal control and management of non-endangered wildlife species;
  • management of State parks, forests and recreation areas; and
  • game warden information.

To report violations, or if you have any questions, call one of the following numbers: 1-800-TIP-MONT • 1-800-634-0690 • (406) 876-668 • (406) 675-4700 • (406) 752-5501

Note to Migratory Waterfowl Hunters:

In order to hunt migratory waterfowl in Montana, you must possess a Conservation License, a State Duck Stamp, and a Federal Duck Stamp. Duck Stamps can be purchased at any retail outlet that sells hunting and fishing equipment, such as sporting goods stores, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, etc. Duck Stamps can also be ordered online, or by calling either (800) DUCK499 or (800) STAMP24. Further information can be found through the Federal Duck Stamp Office home page.
